A memorable day… On the 11 and 12 September (last Sunday/Monday) our 2011 Kearnan College ACC Athletics Squad travelled to Perth for our annual ACC Athletics Carnival. It was a fantastic trip with the team having a very successful carnival day and winning the G Division, which in the process gained the College automatic promotion into the division above from next year (2012). The overall team success also allowed Kearnan College to collect many other age and gender shield categories. These included the Junior Girls’, Senior Girls’, Overall Girls’ Aggregate, and for a record fifth consecutive year the Kearnan Senior School Boys have won the Senior Boys’ Shield. I invite all parents and students to come along and view these awesome shields that are now located inside the “new” Kearnan College Sports Cabinet, located inside the Kearnan College Library. Leading to our overall team success we had many students who also experienced some outstanding individual results:
Open Boys: Matthew Thompson (Champion boy) Bradley Schoone (Runner Up) Open Girls: Jessica Foreman (Champion Girl) Jordan Reeve (Runner Up) U14 Boys: Brodie Reeve (Champion Boy) U13 Boys: Brodie McCreanor (Runner Up)
On a personal note, although it is absolutely outstanding to visually see the rewards of “winning the carnival”, ultimately the most important success came in the way that the students carried themselves throughout the entire trip. I can honestly say that the way every team member conducted themselves on the trip with their exceptional preparation, sportsmanship and behaviour was the very best that I have ever personally been involved with. “Winning” is often a word that is categorically thrown around as a measure of excellence and importance. This is simply not true! Any sporting team that represents Kearnan College chooses to stand for a culture that prides itself in giving 100% effort every time we are granted the opportunity. We will always have some enjoyment and fun on the trip, a chance to build friendships and a strong bond within our team, and when the time comes to perform we know that we will put everything on the line to get the very best result that we can possibly achieve. This is ultimately what “winning” is really about. As a member of a Kearnan sporting team you are already a “winner”. It is the way in which we carry ourselves and build upon this sporting culture that would make every parent, family member and teacher very proud of a student’s efforts. Soon it will be time to bring on 2012! With an overall ‘young’ athletics team this year, the students are energetic, highly motivated and looking to go well in the grade above over the next few years. Finally I would like to give a special thank you to the parents and family members who came up to Perth and supported the squad. I would also like to thank my senior leadership students and ACC Athletics Captains in Bradley Schoone and Jessica Foreman who really did lead from the front both on and off the track. I would also like to thank my fellow Kearnan College teachers (Mrs Conopo, Ms Bonsor, and Mrs Burvill) for the wonderful commitment and contributions that each of these people played in the trip being so successful (staying with the team in Perth and assisting with the preparation and training). Finally we would also like to thank Warren Bus Service and in particular Rory Percival for allowing the team a very safe and comfortable travel, although the word out for next year is that we may need to also book the trailer if we continue to bring home so many shields. A full list of shield category totals plus the individual scores from each particular event can be found through the ACC Website.
